Causes of Hair Thinning

There are a variety of different factors which may contribute to thinning hair. It is possible for hair thinning to be hereditary. This is referred to as male or female pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. It can also be caused by a number of health conditions, including hypothyroidism, diabetes, anemia and cancer. A diet that is not rich in essential nutrients may cause you to experience thinning of the hair. Stress, which may be caused by major surgeries such as chemotherapy, can also contribute to hair loss and thinning of hair. Hair thinning is usually experienced as being the first part in a process that can lead to pattern baldness. When your hair begins to thin, it is a sign that there is decreased nutrition supply to the hair follicle resulting in a starvation process to the actual hair strands. The individual hair strands become thinner and weaker, eventually resulting in them falling out and you starting to experience hair loss.

The starvation or lack of supply of nutrition to the hair follicle, which results in hair thinning, can be directly attributed to a decrease in blood circulation to the hair follicle. Decreased blood circulation is mainly attributed to DHT which is a metabolised form of testosterone, the male hormone. Although DHT is regarded as being the main culprit in hair thinning, there are other causes as well. Some of these causes can be stress, poor diet, poor vitamin uptake, medications, and gastro problems.

Last, but certainly not least, hormonal imbalances can cause hair thinning. These can occur during pregnancy or menopause. Most people will experience at least one type of hormonal imbalance during some point in their lifetime.

Symptoms of Hair Thinning

The symptoms that you will experience when you have hair thinning will mainly depend on whether you are a male or female. Men will typically experience most of their hair thinning on the top of the head and at their hairlines. Women, on the other hand, will experience most of their hair loss between the area that their bangs are to their crowns. Both men and women can experience thinning hair at a very early age, but men tend to experience it as early as the age of 19. Aside from the areas where you may notice a hair loss, you will also probably notice that you have lost a lot more hair in the shower or in brushes than you normally do. The amounts will typically have to be significantly higher than usual for you to even notice this symptom, however.
